FGCU installs living laboratory 10 miles off Southwest Florida coast
In early March, Florida Gulf Coast University began the installation of an exciting new offshore project: an 11-acre artificial reef named Kimberly’s Reef that will be used as an underwater laboratory for students and professors. The reef is 10 miles off Bonita Beach—a half-hour boat ride—in 30 feet of water. It’s made from a series of concrete culverts that were transported to the site by barge and lowered into the water using a crane.
